Peter Obi’s One-Term Presidency Proposal Confirmed for 2027 Election
StartSmart Nigeria reports that Dr. Yunusa Tanko, National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide, has confirmed that Peter Obi, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has formally proposed a single-term presidency if elected in 2027. This strategic move aims to strengthen coalition efforts and reshape Nigeria’s political landscape. Obi’s plan underscores his commitment to transformative leadership, prioritizing impactful governance within a four-year term. Peter Obi one-term presidency
Tanko revealed that the proposal has been submitted to the newly formed opposition coalition for consideration.
On Monday, Peter Obi announced his readiness to serve a single four-year term as president if elected in Nigeria’s 2027 general election. Emphasizing the importance of Nigeria’s unwritten zoning and power rotation principles, Obi stated that any southern candidate must commit to leaving office by May 29, 2031.
This pledge aligns with the tradition of balancing political power between Nigeria’s North and South, ensuring equitable leadership transitions. Obi’s one-term presidency proposal underscores his dedication to national unity and effective governance, positioning him as a key contender in the upcoming election. Peter Obi one-term presidency
Obi’s statement aligns with the opposition’s broader strategy ahead of the 2027 election, where a growing coalition of political heavyweights seeks to unseat President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Peter Obi one-term presidency
The coalition, which includes former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Transport Minister Rotimi Amaechi, and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir el-Rufai, officially adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Tuesday as its political platform for the 2027 contest.
Speaking on Obi’s proposal, Tanko said:
“We have presented it to the coalition. It is there for them to make a decision. But we are confident it can work. This is a pronouncement rooted in integrity, and Peter Obi embodies that. What Nigeria needs now are leaders with integrity.”
While the Nigerian constitution permits a maximum of two presidential terms, Obi’s offer of a single term is a political commitment rather than a legal requirement. According to Tanko, Obi believes four years is sufficient to implement the transformational policies Nigeria urgently needs. Peter Obi one-term presidency
“He’s not just offering a term he’s offering results. That’s the message,” Tanko added.
As discussions deepen within the coalition, Obi’s one-term pledge could become a defining element of a broader strategy aimed at gaining national consensus and rebuilding trust in governance. Peter Obi one-term presidency
