To guarantee a steady and uninterrupted electricity supply to all 17 Local Government Areas (LGAs), particularly those currently underserved by the existing grid.

According to reports gathered by StartSmart Nigeria, the state government has concluded all evaluations needed to acquire the franchise of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) within Abia State.

Governor Otti made this groundbreaking announcement during the commissioning of the new 2 X 15 MVA Ogbor Hill Substation in Aba, developed by Aba Power. The event was attended by notable dignitaries, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who was invited for a facility tour and commissioning ceremony.

Governor Otti, while addressing guests at the event, highlighted his administration’s commitment to providing stable power as a fundamental requirement for economic development and industrial growth. He revealed that the state government is set to acquire the Umuahia ringed-fence of the EEDC, a step that will bring consistent power to eight additional LGAs not currently powered by the Geometric Power grid.

“We have completed all necessary evaluations and due diligence, and an official offer will be made to EEDC,” Otti confirmed.

He further explained that Geometric Power, which operates 11 substations across Aba, is currently generating more than 80 megawatts of excess electricity. Rather than allowing this surplus power to enter the unstable national grid, the state intends to redirect it to Umuahia and surrounding areas for local consumption.

Governor Otti emphasized the significance of Aba as a critical industrial and commercial hub not just in Abia, but across southeastern Nigeria. Known as the “Japan of Africa” for its robust entrepreneurial culture and thriving manufacturing industry, Aba requires a reliable and consistent electricity supply to reach its full economic potential.

“By integrating excess electricity capacity with decisive policy implementation and targeted utility restructuring, Abia is ensuring energy stability, efficiency, and accessibility,” he stated.

Otti noted that improved electricity will not only empower small businesses, manufacturers, and households, but also stimulate sustainable industrialization and long-term economic prosperity across the state.

Geometric Power and the Future of Abia’s Energy Independence

The involvement of Geometric Power in the state’s energy landscape is central to the Governor’s plan. The company, founded by Professor Barth Nnaji, a former Minister of Power, is playing a pivotal role in transforming Aba into a model of energy independence.

With the new Ogbor Hill Substation, Aba Power will expand its reach and service delivery capacity. The substation, equipped with two 15MVA transformers, is expected to enhance voltage quality and reduce energy losses in the distribution network. Alex Otti electricity plan

Governor Otti’s administration aims to leverage existing infrastructure like this, along with regulatory reforms, to take full ownership and control of Abia’s power value chain, from generation to distribution.

Implications for Residents and Businesses

If successful, this move could redefine electricity supply in Abia State, positioning it as one of the few Nigerian states with semi-autonomous power distribution control. Alex Otti electricity plan

Residents and businesses stand to benefit immensely:

  • Reduced power outages
  • Lower dependence on generators
  • Boost in local production
  • More jobs and investment opportunities

For startups and industries in Aba and Umuahia, this is a potential game-changer. Energy stability will improve production timelines, cut costs, and make Abia a more attractive destination for both local and foreign investors.
