In a related development, the Federal Government has announced that the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and the National Examinations Council (NECO) must fully transition to Computer-Based Testing (CBT) starting from 2026.

This announcement was made by the Minister of State for Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, during an official monitoring exercise of the UTME alongside JAMB officials in Bwari, Abuja, on Monday.

Dr. Alausa revealed the government’s two-phase plan for WAEC and NECO:

  • November 2025: WAEC and NECO will begin administering objective questions using CBT.
  • May/June 2026: Both objective and essay sections will be conducted entirely via CBT.

“If JAMB can successfully conduct CBT exams for more than 2.2 million candidates, WAEC and NECO can do the same,” Alausa emphasized.

He stressed the importance of aligning Nigeria’s exam bodies with global standards and improving efficiency, security, and credibility in exam administration.
