Kwankwaso and NNPP Explore Alliances Ahead of 2027 Elections – StartSmart Nigeria

Kwankwaso and NNPP 2027 Elections. As the political landscape in Nigeria continues to evolve ahead of the 2027 general elections, former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) are reportedly exploring major alliances that could reshape their political trajectory.

According to a reliable source who spoke to Punch anonymously, Kwankwaso and the NNPP are unlikely to contest independently in the 2027 elections, unlike their strategy during the 2023 polls.

“What I can confirm is that Kwankwaso and the NNPP will not contest independently as they did in the 2023 elections. Considering the current political landscape, they are weighing the possibility of either joining President Tinubu’s APC or aligning with the coalition led by Atiku, el-Rufai, and others,” the source revealed.

This development comes amidst a rapidly shifting political environment, as key players and parties strategize for alliances ahead of the next general election.

NNPP Confirms Ongoing Political Talks

In reaction to the rising speculations, the National Publicity Secretary of the NNPP, Ladipo Johnson, confirmed in an interview with Punch that the party is indeed engaging in discussions regarding its political future.

Johnson explained:

“In the NNPP, we tend to, at least from our own history as the Kwankwasiyya movement, wait till midterm. May 29th will be the midterm for this administration — two years down, two years to go. That is when proper politicking will commence.”

He emphasized that while discussions are ongoing, the party is not yet ready to disclose specific details about the groups or individuals they are negotiating with.

“Some publications have claimed that Senator Kwankwaso’s move to the APC is imminent. However, a lot of these narratives are fueled by selfish political agendas,” Johnson added.

Three Possible Paths for Kwankwaso and NNPP

According to Johnson, there are currently three options on the table for Kwankwaso and the NNPP:

  1. Remain in the NNPP:
Continue building the party independently, together with allies from previous campaigns.
  2. Form a Coalition with Atiku and Others:
Merge forces with the opposition coalition being shaped by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Nasir el-Rufai, and other political leaders.
  3. Align with the APC:
Possibly join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and collaborate with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

Johnson stressed: “I am not saying any of these is the case now. But these are the three basic options that could happen.”

What This Means for 2027 Elections

The strategic decisions made by Kwankwaso and the NNPP could significantly influence the dynamics of the 2027 presidential race. If they join forces with either major bloc, it could tip the scales in favor of that alliance.

Political observers are watching closely as the NNPP’s next move could either consolidate opposition efforts against the APC or bolster the ruling party’s dominance.

Conclusion

As Nigeria approaches the crucial midterm of President Tinubu’s administration, Kwankwaso and the NNPP’s political future remains open. Whether they choose to stay independent, form an opposition coalition, or join the APC, their decision will likely have a major impact on the road to 2027.
