15GB: MTN Nigeria Reverses 200% Data Bundle Tariff Hike, Says ‘It’s Mistake’

MTN Nigeria has switched its conclusion to expand the tariff on the 15GB data bundle by 200%, admitting that the hike was a mistake. The organization apologized for the abrupt increase, which had raised the price from ₦2,000 to ₦6,000, realizing the frustration it caused among its customers. This reversal came after significant backlash from subscribers and was communicated through MTN’s official channels on X (formerly Twitter), where they humorously admitted the error by stating, “We do cast. We get it and admit it. Let’s just say na mistake.”

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) had previously approved a 50% tariff increase across telecom services, but MTN’s 200% hike on the 15GB plan exceeded this cap. The public’s reaction, coupled with the leadership of the regulatory guideline, prompted MTN to backtrack on the price adjustment. This incident reflects broader issues in the Nigerian telecom sector, including the balance between operational costs for service providers and affordability for consumers amidst economic challenges.
